How to Set Up a Third-Party Subdomain on Squarespace: Step-by-Step Guide
Connecting a subdomain from a third-party provider to your Squarespace site requires just a few technical steps. Here's how to do it properly:
Before Starting
- You need a registered domain with full DNS services
- Set up the subdomain with your provider first
- You don't need to connect the main domain before connecting the subdomain
Step-by-Step Connection Process:
- In Squarespace:
- Go to [Domains] panel
- Click [Use Your Domain]
- Enter your subdomain name
- Click [Continue], then [Connect from Provider]
- Select [Other] from the dropdown
- Click [Connect Domain] and [OK]
- Keep the DNS Settings panel open
- Add First CNAME Record in Your Domain Provider:
- Host: Copy unique verification code from Squarespace
- Type: CNAME
- Points To: verify.squarespace.com
- Add Second CNAME Record:
- Host: Your subdomain (e.g., "blog")
- Type: CNAME
- Points To: ext-cust.squarespace.com
- Complete Connection:
- Return to Squarespace
- Click [Update Records]
- Wait 24-72 hours for connection
- Turn off "Use WWW Prefix" in domain settings if using as primary domain
Troubleshooting Tips:
- If CNAME records aren't supported, use TXT records instead
- Remove any conflicting A records
- Check DNS settings if you see "Cannot verify domain ownership"
- Use the DNS checker tool in Squarespace for verification
Common Issues:
- Connection can take up to 72 hours
- The CNAME for www may show "record not found" (this is normal)
- Some providers may require a period (".") after the verification code
