Email Verification Methods: Using reCAPTCHA and Confirmation Emails for Spam Prevention
Subscriber verification is crucial for preventing spam and maintaining a healthy email list. Here's how to implement it effectively in Squarespace:
Validation Options
Two main verification methods are available:
- Google reCAPTCHA: An invisible security feature that blocks bot submissions
- Confirmation emails: Requires subscribers to verify their email address
These options apply to newsletter blocks and promotional pop-ups using Squarespace storage. Note that checkout newsletter sign-ups, manually added addresses, and imported addresses don't have verification options.
Google reCAPTCHA Implementation
reCAPTCHA works automatically with:
- Form blocks with required email fields
- Newsletter blocks using Squarespace storage
- Promotional pop-ups
You can disable confirmation emails when using reCAPTCHA by:
- Form Blocks: Edit > Edit Fields > Email > Disable Send Confirmation Email
- Newsletter Blocks: Edit > Storage > Squarespace > Disable Send Confirmation Email
- Promotional Pop-ups: Promotional Pop-up panel > Action > Validation > Uncheck Send Confirmation Email
Confirmation Email System
Confirmation emails are sent for:
- Form blocks with email sign-up
- Newsletter blocks
- Promotional pop-ups
- Free memberships
- Acuity Scheduling free services
- Landing page newsletter sign-ups (v7.0)
Customizing Confirmation Emails:
- Go to Email Campaign settings > Validation Options
- Click Customize Email
- Modify text and layout
- Edit styling
- Update subject line and preview text
- Test the email
Troubleshooting Failed Confirmations
If subscribers don't receive confirmation emails:
- Check spam folders
- Whitelist [email protected]
- Verify email address accuracy
- Try an alternative email address
For 404 errors during confirmation:
- Reset form storage connection
- Verify domain pointing
- Reconnect email list to form storage
Remember: EU-based businesses must ensure verification settings comply with local regulations.
