Beginner's Guide to Automated Email Marketing Campaigns
Automated campaigns are triggered emails sent to visitors after specific actions on your website. They help nurture leads and engage customers through personalized communication.
Types of Automated Campaigns:
- Subscriber Activity Automations
- Triggered when someone joins your mailing list
- Include welcome emails, check-in emails, and new subscriber discounts
- Can be connected to specific mailing lists or all subscribers
- Sent immediately or after a set number of days
- Customer Activity Automations
- Triggered by product purchases
- Include thank you emails, product recommendations, loyal customer rewards
- Can be based on specific products, total spent, or number of orders
- Point-of-sale purchases don't trigger these automations
Setting Up Automations:
- Create a draft:
- Click Create in Email Marketing dashboard
- Choose automation type and template
- Design your campaign
- Configure settings:
- Connect to mailing lists or products
- Set trigger conditions
- Schedule sending time (up to 730 days delay)
- Activate the campaign:
- Add subject line and preview text
- Set sender information
- Include physical address
- Send test email (recommended)
- Click Activate Automation
Managing Automations:
- Pause/resume as needed
- Rename or delete through dashboard
- Track performance through analytics
- Monitor opens, clicks, and unsubscribes
Important Notes:
- Automations count toward monthly sending limits
- New timing changes only affect future triggers
- Drip campaigns require multiple automations scheduled at different intervals
- Automations won't send to:
- Manually added/imported contacts
- Unsubscribed users
- Subscription renewals
- Recipients within 30 days of last automation
Track performance through the dashboard analytics to measure recipient engagement, including open rates, click-through rates, and unsubscribes.
Remember: Automations are powerful tools for nurturing customer relationships, but use them strategically to avoid overwhelming subscribers.
