
Understanding Domain Lock: A Guide to Squarespace's Domain Protection System
Domain lock is a security feature that temporarily prevents unauthorized domain transfers. While locked, domains can still be used between Squarespace sites but cannot be transferred to other providers until the lock period ends.
Types of Domain Locks
Contact Information Update Lock:
- 60-day lock when changing contact details (Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC, Key Systems)
- 10-day lock when updating email address (Tucows)
New Registration Lock:
- No lock for Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC (except central registrar locks)
- 60-day lock for Tucows/Key Systems (except certain ccTLDs)
Transfer Lock:
- No lock when transferring to Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
- 60-day lock for Tucows/Key Systems (except certain ccTLDs)
Default Security Lock:
- Applied to all domains
- Can be removed anytime
- Recommended to keep enabled unless actively transferring
Managing a Locked Domain
Disabling Default Lock:
- Open domain dashboard
- Click domain to edit
- Toggle Domain Lock off
Using Locked Domains:
- Can move between Squarespace sites
- Can point to other websites while locked
- Can connect to non-Squarespace sites
ccTLDs Without 60-Day Lock:
- .co.uk, .org.uk, .uk
- .au, .com.au
- .de
- .eu
- .fr
- .it
- .jp
- .nl
- .nz, .co.nz
- .pl
- .pw
For locked third-party domains, you can connect them to Squarespace sites until the lock expires. After the lock period, unlock the domain through your provider to complete the transfer.
