A domain lock is a security measure that prevents unauthorized domain transfers. This guide explains the different types of domain locks and what you can do with your domain while it's locked.

Types of Domain Locks

  1. Contact Information Update Lock
  • 60-day lock when owner's contact information changes (Squarespace Domains)
  • 10-day lock when email address updates (Tucows)
  • Cannot be disabled before expiration
  1. New Registration Lock
  • Some registrars apply 60-day lock for new domain registrations
  • Varies by TLD and registrar
  • Mandatory waiting period before transfer
  1. Transfer Lock
  • 60-day lock may apply after transferring to Squarespace
  • Depends on registrar (Tucows/Key Systems enforce lock, Squarespace Domains don't)
  • Affects transfers to other providers only
  1. Default Security Lock
  • Automatically enabled for security
  • Can be removed at any time
  • Independent of other lock types

Using a Locked Domain

While locked, you can still:

  • Transfer between Squarespace sites
  • Point the domain to another website
  • Update DNS settings
  • Modify nameservers

ccTLDs Without 60-day Locks:

  • .co.uk, .org.uk, .uk
  • .au, .com.au
  • .de
  • .eu
  • .fr
  • .it
  • .jp
  • .nl
  • .nz, .co.nz
  • .pl
  • .pw

To Disable the Default Lock:

  1. Access domains dashboard
  2. Select target domain
  3. Toggle Domain Lock option off

Note: Disabling the default lock won't remove other active, non-removable locks. It's recommended to keep the Domain Lock enabled unless actively transferring the domain.

Domain Pointing Options:

  • Squarespace to Squarespace: Move or link anytime
  • Third-party to Squarespace: Link during lock, transfer after expiration
  • Squarespace to non-Squarespace: Point during lock, transfer after expiration
