
Domain Locking: Understanding Squarespace Domain Security and Transfer Restrictions
Domain locking protects your domain from unauthorized transfers by temporarily blocking domain transfers to other providers. While locked, you can still move domains between Squarespace sites and set up redirects.
Types of Domain Locks
- Contact Information Change Lock
- 60-day lock when updating domain owner details (Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC, Key-Systems)
- 10-day lock when updating email address (Tucows)
- Registration Lock
- No lock for Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC (except central registrar requirements)
- 60-day lock for Tucows/Key-Systems domains
- Transfer Lock
- No lock for Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
- 60-day lock for Tucows/Key-Systems domains
- Default Lock
- Enabled automatically for security
- Can be disabled anytime
- Independent from other mandatory locks

Managing Locked Domains
To Disable Default Lock:
- Open Domains dashboard
- Select domain
- Disable Domain Lock option
Domain Usage While Locked:
- Can redirect to other websites
- Can connect to other Squarespace sites
- Can move between Squarespace sites
- Cannot transfer to other providers until lock expires
ccTLDs Without 60-day Lock:
- .co.uk, .org.uk, .uk
- .au, .com.au
- .de
- .eu
- .fr
- .it
- .jp
- .nl
- .nz, .co.nz
- .pl
- .pw
Best Practice: Keep Domain Lock enabled unless actively transferring to protect against unauthorized transfers.
