Squarespace Domain Names: Understanding Predefined URLs and Customization Options
Predefined domain names are automatically assigned URLs for Squarespace sites, ending in .squarespace.com. They consist of randomly generated words and sometimes characters, forming a unique site identifier.
While logged in, you'll always see your predefined domain in the browser's address bar, even if you have a custom domain. Visitors using your custom domain will see that instead, though your predefined domain remains visible in the login screen and source code.
Key Differences:
- Predefined domain: Automatic .squarespace.com URL
- Custom domain: Your chosen address (e.g., yourdomain.com)
Finding Your Predefined Domain: When seeking support, locate your predefined domain in your browser's address bar while logged in. Copy the complete URL up to "/config".
Changing Your Predefined Domain:
Requirements:
- 3-30 characters long
- Must start with a letter
- Can only use letters, numbers, and hyphens
- Cannot end with a hyphen
- No special characters or symbols allowed
Steps to Change:
- Go to Domain Names panel
- Click current predefined domain name
- Enter new Site ID
- Click Save
Note: You'll receive a confirmation email titled "Update to Your Squarespace URL" after the change. If the desired identifier is already in use, you'll need to choose another or contact support for help reusing a domain from your deleted site.
Limitations:
- Cannot change domains for parked pages
- Cannot modify Acuity Scheduling subscription domains
- Must choose an available, unused identifier
Domain Names panel
The system will automatically validate your new domain name choice and notify you if it's unavailable or doesn't meet requirements. Keep your domain name short and memorable for best results.
