Site-wide passwords prevent unauthorized access to your content by requiring visitors to enter a password. Here's everything you need to know about implementing and managing site-wide password protection.

Key Points:

  • All visitors use the same password
  • Passwords are case-sensitive
  • Password sessions expire after 4 hours
  • Visitors must enter the password before traffic analytics count
  • Not compatible with e-commerce checkout processes

Important Security Notes:

  • Never use your account password as the site-wide password
  • Password entries display as dots (•••••)
  • Password protection prevents search engine indexing
  • Previously indexed content may still appear in search results

Setting a Site-Wide Password:

  1. Open Site Availability panel
  2. Select "Password Protected"
  3. Enter desired password
  4. Click Save

Managing Passwords:

  • To change: Enter new password in Site Availability panel
  • To remove: Select "Public" or "Private" instead of "Password Protected"
  • Test in private browser window to verify functionality

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Check for individual page passwords if prompts persist after removal
  • Disable password managers/browser extensions when setting passwords
  • Type passwords manually to avoid formatting issues
  • For homepage access issues, verify no page-specific password exists

Note: Private sites are only accessible to owners and contributors, while public sites (paid only) are accessible to everyone and search engines.
