Managing and Reusing Digital Assets: A Library Guide

Re-usable assets are a key feature in Squarespace that help maintain consistency and save time. Here's how to manage and reuse images and videos effectively across your site.

Asset Library Overview

The asset library stores all uploaded images, videos, and used stock images. Access it through [Select from Library] or [Search for Images] when adding media to your site.

Reusable Image Locations

  • Banner images
  • Featured images (blog posts, events, pages)
  • Email campaigns
  • Image blocks and galleries
  • Mobile alternative images
  • Product images
  • Site logos (7.1)
  • Background images

Non-Syncing Images

  • Portfolio page images
  • Product featured images
  • Site logos (7.0)

Video Reuse Videos can be reused in:

  • Video blocks
  • Section backgrounds
  • Course pages
  • Video pages

Managing Assets

To view asset details:

  1. Hover over the asset
  2. Click the three dots
  3. Select [File Details]

Asset Organization:

  • Create folders (up to 40 nested levels)
  • Move assets between folders
  • Rename files and folders
  • Sort assets alphabetically or by recent changes

Adding Content

Upload via:

  1. Computer: Drag and drop or use [Add New] > [Upload Files]
  2. Squarespace App: Use [+] > [Upload Assets to Library]

Deleting and Recovery

  • Deleted assets move to trash for 30 days
  • Restore within 30-day window
  • Empty trash to permanently delete
  • Auto-removal of unused images after 8-38 days

Asset Download

  • Download individual images through [File Details]
  • Right-click to save after preview loads
  • Stock image licensing varies (Unsplash free, Getty Images requires additional licensing)

Note: Keep original files backed up, as downloading original-size images may not always be possible after upload.
