Before Starting

  • Create a Squarespace site first
  • Ensure your source platform meets these requirements:
    • WordPress: Version 3.2 or higher, public site
    • Blogger: Public site, "Allow Blog Feed" set to "Full"
    • Tumblr: Remove all Q&A posts before importing

Content Import Capabilities

WordPress Imports:

  • Blog posts and pages
  • Authors and comments
  • Categories and tags
  • Individual images and attachments

Blogger Imports:

  • Posts and comments
  • Images
  • Single blog page format

Tumblr Imports:

  • Text, quotes, links
  • Audio and embedded videos
  • Tags and image captions

Import Process

WordPress Import (Two Methods):

Basic Import (Small Sites):

  1. Navigate to Import/Export Content
  2. Select WordPress > Basic
  3. Enter WordPress URL, username, password
  4. Click Start Import

Advanced Import (Recommended):

  1. Export content from WordPress as XML
  2. In Squarespace, choose WordPress > Advanced
  3. Upload XML file
  4. Select markup language if needed
  5. Start import

Blogger Import:

  1. Go to Import/Export Content
  2. Choose Blogger
  3. Enter blog subdomain
  4. Start import

Tumblr Import:

  1. Access Import/Export Content
  2. Select Tumblr
  3. Enter Tumblr URL
  4. Begin import

Troubleshooting Tips

General Issues:

  • Imports can take up to 6 hours for large sites
  • System automatically retries failed imports 5 times
  • Check platform-specific requirements if import fails

WordPress-Specific:

  • Disable plugins before importing
  • Break large exports into smaller files
  • Ensure domain still points to WordPress during import
  • Limit images to 100 per page/post

After Import:

  1. Enable imported pages
  2. Organize content in navigation
  3. Adjust blog settings
  4. Set homepage preferences
  5. Review and update imported content

Imported content appears in the "Unlinked" section of your pages panel. Refresh to see new content.
