Site-wide password protection prevents visitors from accessing your content unless they enter the correct password. All visitors use the same password, which expires after four hours of inactivity.

Key Points About Site-wide Passwords:

  • Passwords are case-sensitive
  • Don't use your Squarespace account password
  • Password sessions expire after 4 hours
  • Password-protected visits count in traffic analytics
  • Prevents checkout completion (disable before selling)
  • Not available for deprecated cover page plans

Changing or Removing Password:

  • To change: Enter new password in Site Visibility panel
  • To remove: Select Public or Private option instead

Search Engine Impact:

  • Password protection prevents search engine indexing
  • Previously indexed content may still appear in search results
  • Switching to private mode removes site from search engines

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Clear homepage password settings if prompts persist
  • Disable password managers before making changes
  • Enter password manually instead of pasting
  • Check for browser extension conflicts

Enterprise users can implement single sign-on (SSO) for additional security options.
