How to Create and Manage Subdomains in Squarespace: Complete Guide
Creating a subdomain allows you to extend your root domain name for specific sections of your website, like a blog or store. Here's how to set one up in Squarespace.
What is a Subdomain? A subdomain appears before your root domain name (e.g., blog.yourdomain.com). While "www" is the most common subdomain, you can create custom ones to point to different sections of your site.
Creating a Subdomain Through URL Redirect Rules:
- Navigate to your domain panel
- Select your domain
- Click Website
- Scroll to URL Redirect Rules
- Click Add Rule
- Enter subdomain name (e.g., blog) in "Redirect from"
- Enter full destination URL in "Redirect to"
- Configure Advanced Settings:
- Choose redirect type (301 or 302)
- Keep SSL enabled (recommended)
- Save changes
Editing a Subdomain:
- Go to URL Redirect Rules
- Click Edit next to the subdomain
- Make changes
- Save
Deleting a Subdomain:
- Locate subdomain in URL Redirect Rules
- Click the trash can icon
- Confirm deletion
Manual Subdomain Creation (DNS Settings):
- Open domain panel
- Select domain
- Click DNS
- Add Default Record > select subdomain
- Enter subdomain name
- Set redirect destination
- Click Add
Important Notes:
- Subdomains typically point to your site's homepage
- Custom redirects can point to specific pages
- For third-party domains, use Nameserver Connect or DNS Connect
- Keep SSL enabled for security
- Choose between temporary (302) or permanent (301) redirects based on your needs
This process works for Squarespace-managed domains or third-party domains connected through Nameserver Connect. For third-party subdomains, use the third-party subdomain connection process instead.
