Creating a subdomain allows you to extend your root domain name for specific sections of your website, like a blog or store. Here's how to set one up in Squarespace.

What is a Subdomain? A subdomain appears before your root domain name (e.g., blog.yourdomain.com). While "www" is the most common subdomain, you can create custom ones to point to different sections of your site.

Creating a Subdomain Through URL Redirect Rules:

  1. Navigate to your domain panel
  2. Select your domain
  3. Click Website
  4. Scroll to URL Redirect Rules
  5. Click Add Rule
  6. Enter subdomain name (e.g., blog) in "Redirect from"
  7. Enter full destination URL in "Redirect to"
  8. Configure Advanced Settings:
    • Choose redirect type (301 or 302)
    • Keep SSL enabled (recommended)
  9. Save changes

Editing a Subdomain:

  1. Go to URL Redirect Rules
  2. Click Edit next to the subdomain
  3. Make changes
  4. Save

Deleting a Subdomain:

  1. Locate subdomain in URL Redirect Rules
  2. Click the trash can icon
  3. Confirm deletion

Manual Subdomain Creation (DNS Settings):

  1. Open domain panel
  2. Select domain
  3. Click DNS
  4. Add Default Record > select subdomain
  5. Enter subdomain name
  6. Set redirect destination
  7. Click Add

Important Notes:

  • Subdomains typically point to your site's homepage
  • Custom redirects can point to specific pages
  • For third-party domains, use Nameserver Connect or DNS Connect
  • Keep SSL enabled for security
  • Choose between temporary (302) or permanent (301) redirects based on your needs

This process works for Squarespace-managed domains or third-party domains connected through Nameserver Connect. For third-party subdomains, use the third-party subdomain connection process instead.
