Adding Additional Nameservers to DNS Records

Adding extra nameservers to your DNS settings helps point subdomains to other servers. This guide explains how to manage nameservers for domains registered with Squarespace or connected via nameserver connect.

Prerequisites

  • Disable DNSSEC protection before adding custom nameservers
  • Have your NS records ready from your provider

Disable DNSSEC Protection:

  1. Open domain dashboard
  2. Select your domain
  3. Navigate to DNS > DNSSEC
  4. Turn off DNS Security Extensions
  5. Click Confirm in the popup window

Add Custom Nameservers:

  1. Go to domain dashboard
  2. Select your domain
  3. Navigate to DNS > DNS Settings
  4. Scroll to Custom Records
  5. Click Add Record
  6. Select NS as Type
  7. Enter host value from provider
  8. Input provider's DS record in Data field
  9. Save changes

Remove Custom Nameservers:

  1. Disable DNSSEC following steps above
  2. Go to DNS > Domain Nameservers
  3. Click "Use Squarespace Nameservers"
  4. Save changes
  5. Re-enable DNSSEC if desired

Troubleshooting:

  • "Nameserver could not be added": Wait until domain transfer is complete
  • Missing DNS Security Extensions toggle: Delete DS records manually
  • Allow 24-72 hours for DNS changes to propagate

Note: For domains using DNS connect, edit DNS settings through your external domain provider instead.

Important: All DNS changes may take 24-72 hours to fully update across the internet.
