How to Change Your Squarespace Domain Name: A Step-by-Step Guide
A Squarespace domain name can only be changed within five days of registration. After this period, the domain becomes permanent. Here's how to change your domain name:
Within 5-Day Grace Period:
- Cancel Current Domain
- Navigate to your domains panel
- Click the domain you want to cancel
- Select "Delete domain"
- You'll receive a refund, and the domain will stop pointing to your site
- Register New Domain
- Return to domains panel
- Register your desired new domain name
Important Notes:
- Grace period is measured precisely (e.g., if registered at 8:00 a.m. on January 1st, cancellation available until 7:59 a.m. on January 6th)
- Primary domains cannot be deleted without setting a different primary domain first
- Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) like .co.uk or .de don't have a grace period or refund option
- Domains registered through resellers must be cancelled through the reseller's account
After 5-Day Grace Period:
- Domain cannot be changed
- Only option is to purchase a new domain and set it as primary
- Original domain remains registered to your account
For ccTLD Domains:
- No cancellation grace period applies
- Can only disable auto-renewal
- Check specific rules for your domain extension
This ensures your site remains accessible while transitioning to a new domain name.
