How to Add Disqus Comments to Your Squarespace Site
Disqus comments work differently than Squarespace's built-in commenting system, being URL-specific and requiring user accounts. Here's how to set it up:
Before Starting
- Ensure you use consistent URLs, as comments only appear for the specific URL configured
- Add your secure (https) domain to Disqus as trusted
- Comments won't transfer from Squarespace's system to Disqus
Create a Disqus Shortname:
- Log in to Disqus
- Click "Add Disqus to your site"
- Select "I want to install Disqus on my site"
- Enter your site name (becomes your shortname)
- Choose a category
- Click "Create Site"
- Subscribe to a Disqus plan
- Select "Squarespace" as platform
- Copy your shortname
Add Disqus to Squarespace:
- Open blog preferences
- Paste Disqus shortname
- Click Save
- Enable comments in Comment Settings
- Verify comments are enabled on individual posts
Troubleshooting:
- If comments don't appear, ensure:
- You have a Disqus Website account (not User account)
- Shortname is correctly added to blog preferences
- URLs match between Disqus and site access
- Template doesn't use Ajax loading
Usage:
- Visitors must log in via Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, or Google
- Comments only appear on the URL registered with Disqus
- Customize appearance through Disqus settings
- Previous Squarespace comments won't transfer to Disqus
