How to Add Disqus Comments to a Squarespace Site: Step-by-Step Guide
A Disqus comment system offers enhanced commenting features for your Squarespace site, including threaded conversations and image comments. Here's how to set it up properly:
Before Getting Started
- Comments are URL-specific, so visitors must use the same URL to see their comments
- Use the secure (https) version of your main domain as a trusted domain in Disqus
- Comments made on different URLs won't be visible across domains
Create Your Disqus Shortname:
- Log in to Disqus
- Click "Add Disqus to your site"
- Select "I want to install Disqus on my site"
- Choose a website name (this becomes your shortname)
- Select a category
- Choose a plan or start a trial
- Select Squarespace as your platform
- Copy your Disqus shortname
Add Disqus to Squarespace:
- Open Blog Preferences
- Enter your Disqus shortname
- Click Save
- Go to Comment Settings
- Enable global comments
- Save changes
Using Disqus Comments:
- Visitors must log in using Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, or Google
- Comments appear on blog posts with comments enabled
- Customize appearance through Disqus settings
Troubleshooting:
- If comments don't appear, verify:
- You created a Website account (not User account)
- Shortname is correctly added to blog preferences
- Comments are enabled on individual posts
- URLs match between Disqus and site access
- Previous Squarespace comments won't transfer to Disqus
- Ajax-enabled templates may affect comment display
To ensure proper functionality:
- Use consistent URLs across your site
- Enable comments on individual posts
- Configure proper trusted domains in Disqus
- Test commenting system after setup
