Adding DNS Records to Your Domain

DNS records, also known as resource records, contain vital information that connects users to your website or email address. They help authenticate domain ownership and enhance website security.

When to Update DNS Records:

  • Connecting to third-party tools (like Google Site Verification or Salesforce)
  • Setting up third-party email services
  • Forwarding a domain
  • Fixing disconnected domains

You can manage DNS records in Squarespace if you:

  • Own a Squarespace-managed domain
  • Connected a third-party domain via nameserver connection

Note: For domains connected via DNS connection, edit DNS settings through your third-party domain provider.

Adding DNS Records:

  1. Open the domain dashboard
  2. Click your domain name
  3. Select [DNS Settings]

Common DNS Record Types:

  • A Records (IPv4 addresses)
  • AAAA Records (IPv6 addresses)
  • CNAME Records (domain aliases)
  • MX Records (email routing)
  • TXT Records (domain verification)
  • DKIM/SPF Records (email authentication)
  • SRV Records (service location)

Custom TTL Settings:

  • Default: 4 hours
  • Customizable in seconds
  • Maximum value: 2147483648 seconds

Deleting DNS Records:

  1. Navigate to domain dashboard
  2. Select domain name
  3. Click [DNS] > [DNS Settings]
  4. Find record under [Custom Records]
  5. Click trash can icon to delete
  6. Save changes

Important Notes:

  • DNS changes typically take 24-72 hours to propagate
  • Review records carefully before deletion
  • Backup important DNS settings before making changes
  • Consult third-party service documentation for specific record requirements

This setup ensures proper domain functionality while maintaining security and connectivity with essential services.
