Domain locking prevents unauthorized transfers of your domain and is a vital security measure that follows ICANN Transfer Policy guidelines. Here's everything you need to know about domain locks at Squarespace.
Types of Domain Locks
- Contact Information Update Lock:
- 60-day lock when changing domain owner contact info (Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC, Key Systems)
- 10-day lock for email updates (Tucows)
- New Registration Lock:
- No automatic lock with Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
- 60-day lock with Tucows or Key Systems (except some ccTLDs)
- Transfer Lock:
- No lock when transferring to Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
- 60-day lock with Tucows or KeySystems (except some ccTLDs)
- Default Security Lock:
- Enabled by default
- Can be removed at any time
- Independent of other active locks

While your domain is locked, you can still:
- Move it between Squarespace sites
- Point it to another website
- Connect it to different hosting

- .jp
- .nl
- .nz, .co.nz
- .pl
- .pw
To Disable Default Lock:
- Open domain panel
- Select your domain
- Toggle off Domain Lock option
Best Practice: Keep domain lock enabled unless actively transferring to protect against unauthorized transfers.
