Domain locking prevents unauthorized transfers of your domain and is a vital security measure that follows ICANN Transfer Policy guidelines. Here's everything you need to know about domain locks at Squarespace.

Types of Domain Locks

  1. Contact Information Update Lock:
  • 60-day lock when changing domain owner contact info (Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC, Key Systems)
  • 10-day lock for email updates (Tucows)
  1. New Registration Lock:
  • No automatic lock with Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
  • 60-day lock with Tucows or Key Systems (except some ccTLDs)
  1. Transfer Lock:
  • No lock when transferring to Squarespace Domains LLC/II LLC
  • 60-day lock with Tucows or KeySystems (except some ccTLDs)
  1. Default Security Lock:
  • Enabled by default
  • Can be removed at any time
  • Independent of other active locks

Using a Locked Domain

While your domain is locked, you can still:

  • Move it between Squarespace sites
  • Point it to another website
  • Connect it to different hosting

ccTLDs Without 60-day Locks:

  • .co.uk, .org.uk, .uk
  • .au, .com.au
  • .de
  • .eu
  • .fr
  • .it
  • .jp
  • .nl
  • .nz, .co.nz
  • .pl
  • .pw

To Disable Default Lock:

  1. Open domain panel
  2. Select your domain
  3. Toggle off Domain Lock option

Best Practice: Keep domain lock enabled unless actively transferring to protect against unauthorized transfers.
