Domain Forwarding: How to Redirect Your Squarespace Domain
Domain forwarding redirects visitors from one URL to another. Here's how to set it up effectively on Squarespace:
Before Starting:
- Domain forwarding is for Squarespace-registered domains only
- Updates can take up to 72 hours to complete
- Different steps apply for third-party domains
Forwarding Types:
- Root Domain Forwarding:
- Open domain dashboard
- Click domain name > Website
- Under "Domain Forwarding Rules" click "Add Rule"
- Enter "@" in "Forwarding From"
- Enter destination URL in "Forwarding To"
- Choose redirect type (301 permanent or 302 temporary)
- Keep SSL enabled
- Select path forwarding preference
- Save changes
- Subdomain Forwarding:
- Follow same steps as root domain
- Enter subdomain name instead of "@"
- Enter full destination URL
- Configure SSL and path settings
- Save changes
- Page-Specific Forwarding:
- Follow root domain steps
- Enter complete URL with page slug
- Configure redirect settings
- Select path forwarding option
- Save changes
Path Forwarding Options:
- Maintain Path: Keeps original URL structure
- Remove Path: Redirects all URLs to new address
Troubleshooting Tips:
- Clear browser cache if forwarding doesn't work
- Check for URL typos
- Remove conflicting DNS records
- Ensure proper SSL configuration
- Use private browsing to test forwarding
Best Practices:
- Double-check all URLs before saving
- Wait full propagation time
- Keep SSL enabled when possible
- Choose appropriate redirect type
- Monitor forwarding after setup
For domains using custom nameservers, add required DNS records through your provider before setting up forwarding.
