Domain redirection in Squarespace enables visitors to be automatically sent to another website or page. Here's how to set it up properly:

Types of Domain Redirection

  • Root domain redirection (example.com to newsite.com)
  • Subdomain redirection (blog.example.com)
  • Specific page redirection (example.com/blog)

Setting Up Domain Redirection

  1. Access Domain Settings
  • Open Domains dashboard
  • Select target domain
  • Click Website
  • Scroll to "Domain redirection rules"
  • Click "Add a rule"
  1. Configure Redirection
  • Redirect from: Enter @ (root domain) or subdomain name
  • Redirect to: Enter full destination URL
  • Choose redirect type (301 Permanent or 302 Temporary)
  • Select SSL settings (recommended: enabled)
  • Choose path redirection option (keep or remove paths)

Path Redirection Options

  • Keep paths: Maintains original URL structure
  • Remove paths: All URLs redirect to new root domain
  • Best for matching URL structures between sites

Important Considerations

  • Updates can take up to 72 hours
  • Clear browser cache to see changes
  • Ensure correct URL format without http:// or https://
  • Cannot modify DNS records during active redirection
  • WWW version automatically redirects with root domain

Troubleshooting

Common Issues:

  • Browser caching delays
  • URL typos or format errors
  • Conflicting DNS records
  • Connection failures with non-Squarespace sites

Fix DNS Conflicts:

  1. Remove conflicting records
  2. Add new CNAME record
  3. Redirect root domain
  4. Save changes

Best Practices

  • Verify URL structure compatibility
  • Use SSL encryption
  • Double-check all URLs before saving
  • Test in private browsing mode
  • Keep original domain active during transition
