A third-party domain can be connected to Squarespace using either nameserver connection or DNS connection. Here's what you need to know about each method:

Nameserver Connection

Use nameserver connection if your domain:

  • Is from GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Network Solutions
  • Has no custom DNS records
  • Has no subdomains
  • Has no DNSSEC enabled
  • Has no complex domain setup (glue records or forwarding)
  • Doesn't use services requiring specific nameservers (like Cloudflare or AWS)

The setup process involves adding two nameserver records to your domain provider's DNS settings through a guided procedure.

DNS Connection

Use DNS connection if:

  • Your domain is from other providers
  • You need to maintain custom DNS records
  • You have any of the limitations listed above

The setup requires manually adding two CNAME records and four A records to your domain provider's DNS settings.

Managing DNS Records

For nameserver connection:

  • Edit records directly in Squarespace's Domains dashboard
  • Click the domain and select "Edit" in DNS settings

For DNS connection:

  • Manage records through your domain provider's account

Disabling Nameserver Connection

  1. Go to Domains panel
  2. Click "Use a domain I own"
  3. Enter domain name
  4. Click "Connect domain"
  5. Select "No, use DNS records"
  6. Choose domain provider
  7. Log in to provider account
  8. Complete connection

Note: If you have custom email addresses or other features using DNS records, choose DNS connection to prevent service interruption.

You can verify your current connection method in the Domains panel, which displays either "DNS connection" or "nameserver connection" for connected domains.

This setup ensures your domain properly directs visitors to your Squarespace site while maintaining any existing domain features you need.
