Domain Connection Guide: Name Server vs DNS Connection Methods for Squarespace
Domain connection methods offer two ways to connect your third-party domain to Squarespace: name server connection and DNS connection. Each method has specific use cases and considerations.
Name Server Connection
Best for domains from:
- GoDaddy
- Namecheap
- Network Solutions
Avoid name server connection if your domain:
- Uses custom DNS records
- Has multiple subdomains
- Has DNSSEC enabled
- Requires complex domain setup
- Uses security services like Cloudflare or AWS
- Doesn't show the name server option in domains panel
DNS Connection
Recommended when:
- Your domain provider isn't listed above
- You need to maintain custom DNS records
- You require advanced domain features

general Squarespace website settings
Key Differences
Setup Process:
- Name Server Connection: Guided process, requires adding two name server records
- DNS Connection: Manual process, requires adding two CNAME records and four A records
DNS Record Management:
- Name Server Connection: Edit through Squarespace domains panel
- DNS Connection: Edit through your domain provider's platform
Disabling Name Server Connection
- Open Domains panel
- Click "Use a custom domain"
- Enter domain name
- Click "Connect Domain"
- Select "No, use DNS records"
- Choose domain provider
- Log into provider account
- Complete connection process
For domains with custom email addresses or ad blockers, use DNS connection to prevent service disruption. Check your Domains panel to confirm which connection method you're currently using.
Both methods effectively direct visitors to your site, but their implementation and management differ. Choose based on your domain provider and specific needs for custom records or advanced features.
