How to Choose Between Nameserver Connect and DNS Connect for Domain Setup
Domain owners can connect their third-party domains to Squarespace using either Nameserver Connect or DNS Connect. Here's what you need to know about each method:
Nameserver Connect
- Recommended for domains from GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Network Solutions
- DNS records are stored with Squarespace
- Guided setup process requiring only two nameserver records
- Edit DNS settings directly in Squarespace's Domain dashboard
Don't use Nameserver Connect if your domain has:
- Custom DNS records
- Multiple subdomains
- DNSSEC enabled
- Complex domain configurations
- Security or traffic services (like Cloudflare or AWS)
DNS Connect
- Suitable for all other domain providers
- DNS records remain stored with your domain provider
- Manual setup requiring CNAME and A records
- Edit DNS settings through your domain provider's dashboard

Squarespace DNS settings page
To Disable Nameserver Connect:
- Open Domain Names panel
- Click "I already have a domain"
- Enter domain name
- Click Connect Domain
- Select "No, use DNS records"
- Choose domain provider
- Log into provider account
- Click Connect
- Click Continue on your site
Check Your Connection Type: To verify which method you're using, check your Domain Names panel - it will indicate either DNS Connect or Nameserver Connect for your connected domain.
Note: If your domain uses custom email addresses or ad blockers with custom DNS records, use DNS Connect to prevent service interruption.
