A link on your site may lead to a login screen, error page, or incorrect domain when there are URL errors. Here's how to fix the most common issues:

Links Leading to Login Screen

If visitors see a login screen when clicking a link, the URL likely contains "/config#/". This happens when you copy URLs while editing your site. To fix this, ensure you're using the public-facing URL instead of the editing URL.

Links Going to Error 404 Pages

When links lead to "Page not found" errors, check for:

  • Changed URLs
  • Typos in the URL
  • Broken or outdated links

You can either manually update the links or set up URL redirects to guide visitors to the correct pages.

Wrong Domain Links

If links show your integrated domain (example.squarespace.com) instead of your custom domain:

  1. Reset the link by reselecting the URL in the link editor
  2. Verify your preferred domain is set as primary
  3. Note that the integrated domain will always show while editing

Fixing External Links

To fix links to external websites:

  1. Visit the target page and copy its URL
  2. Test the URL in an incognito window
  3. Open the link editor on your site
  4. Paste the verified URL
  5. Test the link in an incognito window

Fixing Internal Links

For links to content within your site:

  1. Open the link editor
  2. Use the URL tab to search for the specific page or product
  3. Select the correct internal page
  4. Test the link in an incognito window

Category and Tag Links

When linking to categories or tags:

  • Use the built-in linking method when possible
  • Ensure exact case matching (e.g., "Recipe" vs. "recipe")
  • Verify the category or tag exists

Remember to regularly check all links on your site and update them as needed to maintain a smooth user experience.
