A custom domain email address can be managed through your existing provider or migrated to Google Workspace when using Squarespace. Here's what you need to know about both options.

Keeping Your Current Email Provider

You can continue using your existing email service without affecting your Squarespace site's functionality. This works for both third-party and Squarespace domains:

  • Third-party domains: Connect to Squarespace using CNAME and A records without changing nameservers or MX records
  • Squarespace domains: Add necessary DNS records for your email provider

Migrating to Google Workspace

Moving to Google Workspace allows you to manage your email through Gmail while keeping your custom domain email address. Benefits include:

  • Billing managed through Squarespace
  • Access to Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive
  • Works with both third-party and Squarespace domains

Migration Process:

  1. Create Google Workspace Account
  • Sign up through Squarespace
  • Use your existing custom domain
  • Add email addresses for all users
  • Allow up to 72 hours for MX record changes to take effect
  1. Import Existing Content
  • Export emails and contacts from current provider
  • Use Google's Data Migration Service
  • Transfer all email history
  1. Cancel Previous Service Before canceling, ensure:
  • Complete setup is finished
  • Emails are being received correctly
  • All content is saved from previous account

For Squarespace domains: Remove old MX records but keep Google Workspace records For third-party domains: Only cancel email service, maintain domain service and Google Workspace MX records

Important: Don't cancel your current email service until Google Workspace setup is complete and working properly. The transition period typically takes 1-2 hours but can extend up to 72 hours.
