
How to Add and Manage Custom Name Servers in DNS Records
Name servers store domain resource records containing information about email providers and web hosts. Adding custom name servers to DNS settings helps manage subdomains on different servers.
Before Adding Custom Name Servers
- Disable DNSSEC protection:
- Navigate to domain dashboard
- Select domain
- Click DNS > DNSSEC
- Toggle off DNS Security Extensions
- Confirm changes
Adding Custom NS Records

Gather NS records from your provider

Access DNS Settings:
- Open domain dashboard
- Select domain
- Click DNS > DNS Settings
- Scroll to Custom Records
- Click Add Record

Configure NS Record:
- Select NS as Type
- Enter host values
- Input provider's NS records in Data field
- Save changes
Note: Changes may take 24-72 hours to propagate.
Removing Custom Name Servers
- Disable DNSSEC
- Reset to default name servers:
- Access Domain Name Servers
- Click Use Squarespace Name Servers
- Save changes
- Re-enable DNSSEC
Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions:
- Unable to add name servers: Wait for pending domain transfers to complete
- Missing DNS Security Extensions toggle: Remove DS records manually
- Allow up to 72 hours for changes to take effect
