Choosing between nameserver connect and DNS connect depends on your domain setup and specific needs.

Nameserver Connect

  • Best for domains from GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Network Solutions
  • Simple guided setup process
  • DNS records are stored at Squarespace
  • Edit DNS records directly in Squarespace dashboard

DNS Connect

  • Suitable for all domain providers
  • Required when you have:
    • Custom DNS records
    • Multiple subdomains
    • DNSSEC enabled
    • Complex domain setup (glue records/forwarding)
    • Security services (Cloudflare/AWS)
    • Custom email addresses
  • DNS settings remain with your domain provider
  • Manual setup with CNAME and A records

How to Opt Out of Nameserver Connect:

  1. Open Domains panel
  2. Click "Use a domain I own"
  3. Enter domain name
  4. Click "Connect domain"
  5. Select "No, use DNS records"
  6. Choose domain provider
  7. Sign into provider account
  8. Complete connection

To Check Your Connection Type:

  • Visit your Domains panel
  • The connection type (DNS or nameserver) will be displayed next to your domain

Both methods effectively connect your domain to Squarespace, but choosing the right one ensures your domain services continue working properly. DNS connect offers more flexibility for custom setups, while nameserver connect provides a simpler management experience.
