Connecting a third-party domain to Squarespace can be done through two methods: Nameserver Connection and DNS Connect. Here's what you need to know about each option.

Nameserver Connection: Best For Simple Setups

  • Recommended for GoDaddy, Namecheap, and Network Solutions domains
  • Uses Squarespace's nameservers to manage DNS records
  • Features a guided setup process
  • Requires adding two nameserver entries to your domain provider's settings

DNS Connect: Best For Complex Setups

  • Suitable for all domain providers
  • Keeps DNS records with your current provider
  • Requires manual setup
  • Involves adding two CNAME records and four A records

When to Use DNS Connect Instead of Nameserver Connection:

  • You have custom DNS records
  • Your domain has multiple sub-domains
  • DNSSEC is enabled
  • You have complex domain configurations (Glue records or domain forwarding)
  • You need special services requiring provider nameservers (Cloudflare, AWS)
  • Nameserver Connection option isn't available in your Domains menu

Managing DNS Records After Connection:

  • Nameserver Connection: Edit through Squarespace's domain dashboard
  • DNS Connection: Edit through your domain provider's account

Disabling Nameserver Connect:

  1. Open Domains menu
  2. Click Use External Domain
  3. Enter domain name
  4. Click Connect Domain
  5. Select "No, use DNS records"
  6. Choose domain provider
  7. Complete authentication
  8. Follow connection prompts

To verify your connection type, check the Domains menu, which displays whether you're using DNS Connect or Nameserver Connect.

Remember: If you have custom features like email addresses or ad blockers using custom DNS records, use DNS Connect to ensure these features continue working properly.
