Report Malware: How to Troubleshoot and Fix Website Link Issues
Links are essential elements of your website that can sometimes malfunction. Here's how to identify and fix common link issues:
Login Screen Redirect Issues
If clicking a link leads to a login page, the URL likely contains "/config#/", which only works for logged-in users. This typically happens when copying URLs from the site editor instead of the published site.
Wrong Domain Display
When links show your built-in domain (example.squarespace.com) instead of your custom domain:
- Reset the link by reselecting the page in the link editor
- Verify your primary domain settings
- Note that the built-in domain always shows when editing
404 Errors and Missing Pages
To fix links leading to 404 errors:
- Check for URL changes or typos
- Update outdated links manually
- Set up URL redirects where necessary
Fixing External Web Address Links
- Copy the target URL from your browser
- Test the URL in an incognito window
- Open the link editor on your site
- Paste the verified URL
- Test the link in a private browsing session
Internal Site Content Links
To fix broken internal links:
- Open the link editor
- Use the URL tab to search for the specific page or product
- Select the correct page from search results
- Test the link in an incognito window
Category and Tag Links
Remember that categories and tags are case-sensitive. Match the exact case when creating links (e.g., "Recipe" vs. "recipe").
Imported Content Links
For links from imported content:
- Reset old links using the new page structure
- Search for corresponding pages in the link editor
- Set up URL redirects if needed
These solutions address most common link issues and help maintain a smooth user experience on your website.
