Third-party domain connections can fail for various reasons. Here's a comprehensive guide to resolve common issues:

Initial Connection Period

  • Wait 24-72 hours after connecting a domain for DNS settings to fully propagate
  • Error messages during this period are normal

SSL Certificate Issues

  • Security warnings in browser indicate SSL problems
  • Reference SSL troubleshooting guide for resolution

Domain Already Connected

  • Check other Squarespace sites for existing connections
  • Disconnect domain from previous site if found
  • Contact support if unable to locate connected site

CNAME Record Issues Two required CNAME records:

  1. verify.squarespace.com
  2. ext-cust.squarespace.com

A Record Configuration Required settings:

  • Alias/hostname: www
  • Destination: 198.185.159.144

Delete unnecessary A records:

  • @ records (only if not matching connection records)
  • Blank records (specifying domain without www)
  • Keep mail records to maintain email service

Resolving "Records Not Found" Errors:

  1. Check DNS Settings panel
  2. Verify DNS settings in domain provider account
  3. Update records if needed
  4. Click Update in Squarespace
  5. Wait 24-72 hours for propagation
  6. Check for "Healthy" status

Name Server Issues:

  • Varies based on connection settings
  • Reset to provider defaults if connection fails after 72 hours
  • Don't modify name servers when using DNS connection
  • Ensure correct name server configuration with provider

Deprecated Records:

  • Update old domain records
  • Ensure CNAME and A records match current requirements

Extra Records:

  • Remove conflicting records from domain provider account
  • Check DNS Settings panel for red-highlighted conflicts

If problems persist:

  1. Contact domain provider support
  2. Verify DNS settings
  3. Consider reconnecting domain from scratch
  4. Wait full propagation period

Remember to maintain email functionality while making changes and always backup settings before modifications.
