Start by backing up your content before importing to Squarespace from WordPress, Blogger, or Tumblr. This one-time process transfers your existing content but won't sync future updates.

Platform-Specific Requirements:

WordPress:

  • Requires version 3.2 or higher
  • Only accepts WordPress .xml files
  • Disable all plugins before importing
  • Site must be public

Blogger:

  • Site must be public
  • Set Blog Feed to "Full" in Feed Settings
  • Creates new blog page per import

Tumblr:

  • Remove all Ask/Answer posts before importing
  • Creates new blog page per import
  • Not compatible with Ask/Answer format

What Gets Imported:

WordPress imports:

  • Blog posts, pages, and authors
  • Comments and categories
  • Individual images and attachments
  • Tags

Blogger imports:

  • Posts
  • Comments
  • Images

Tumblr imports:

  • Text, audio, and chat posts
  • Links and quotes
  • Image captions
  • Embedded third-party videos
  • Tags

Import Process:

WordPress (Two options):

  1. Basic Import (for small sites):
  • Navigate to Import panel
  • Enter WordPress credentials
  • Click Begin Import
  1. Advanced Import (recommended):
  • Export WordPress content as .xml
  • Upload file to Squarespace
  • Select markup language if needed
  • Begin import

Blogger:

  • Go to Import panel
  • Enter blogspot subdomain
  • Click Begin Import

Tumblr:

  • Access Import panel
  • Enter Tumblr URL
  • Click Begin Import

Troubleshooting Failed Imports:

  • System automatically retries 5 times over 6 hours
  • Check platform-specific requirements
  • Verify credentials and URLs
  • For large imports, break content into smaller chunks
  • Remove problematic content (like Tumblr Ask/Answer posts)

After Successful Import:

  1. Enable imported pages
  2. Add pages to navigation
  3. Organize blog posts
  4. Customize page names
  5. Set homepage if desired

Note: Imported content appears in the "Not linked" section and needs manual activation.
