When canceling your website, you have several options for managing your domain based on how it was originally registered:

For Squarespace Domains:

  • Domains don't automatically expire when you cancel your website
  • Auto-renewal continues on the scheduled date
  • You can:
    • Keep the domain with Squarespace and connect it to another site
    • Move it to a different Squarespace site (do this before canceling)
    • Transfer to another provider (do this before canceling)
    • Cancel the domain by disabling auto-renewal

For Legacy Free Domains:

  • When canceling a site with a free legacy domain, you must choose to:
    • Let the domain expire
    • Convert to a paid domain ($20/year)

For Third-Party Domains:

  • Disconnect the domain from Squarespace before canceling your website
  • Continue managing through your original domain provider

Best Practices:

  • Review all connected domains before cancellation
  • Make decisions about domain management before canceling your website
  • Consider keeping your domain if you plan to use it in the future
  • Complete any domain transfers or moves before canceling your website subscription

Remember that your domain name is your online identity. Even if you're taking your website offline, maintaining ownership of your domain might be valuable for future use.
