Changes to Website Subscription Plans
You can upgrade or downgrade your Squarespace website plan and billing period anytime. Here's everything you need to know about managing your subscription.
Before Making Changes
- Only website owners and administrators with billing permissions can modify subscriptions
- Review feature availability in your target plan before switching
- Clear any overdue payments before making changes
- Remove premium features before downgrading
- Changes can be made to both plan and billing period simultaneously
How to Change Your Plan or Billing Period
- Go to account dashboard and select your website
- Navigate to Payment Menu > Subscriptions
- Click Website or Squarespace under Subscriptions
- Select "Upgrade" (even for downgrades)
- Choose your new plan and billing period
- Review and confirm purchase
When Changes Take Effect
Upgrades:
- Immediate access to new features (unless changing billing period simultaneously)
- Prorated charges apply for plan differences
Downgrades:
- Access to current features until billing period ends
- No prorated refunds available
- Must remove premium features before downgrading to Personal plan:
- Remove carrier-calculated shipping
- Adjust page count within limits
- Disable automatic tax rates
- Remove extra shipping zones
- Reduce contributors to maximum of two
Billing Period Changes
- Features remain unchanged when only modifying billing period
- Renewal dates adjust to new cycle
- Automatic renewal activates with any subscription changes
- Domain billing remains annual, even with monthly website plans
Free Domain Considerations
- Legacy free domains convert to paid ($20/year) when switching to monthly billing
- Enable "My Domain Renew" to maintain registration
- Domain expires at period end if renewal disabled
Important Notes
- Can't transfer subscriptions between websites
- PayPal users may need to reset connection after downgrading
- Domain renewal billing occurs 15 days before expiration
- Renewal reminder emails sent to domain contacts
- Manual billing date changes require subscription deactivation and reactivation
