When cancelling a website, managing your domain properly is crucial to maintain control and accessibility. Here's what you need to know about handling different types of domains:

Squarespace Domains

Your Squarespace domain remains active even after cancelling your website subscription. You have several options:

  • Keep the domain with Squarespace for future use
  • Transfer it to another Squarespace site
  • Move it to a different provider
  • Let it expire by disabling auto-renewal

The domain will continue linking to the cancelled site until you make changes or transfer it.

Squarespace Legacy Domains

Free legacy domains linked to annual website plans have two options upon cancellation:

  • End domain renewal
  • Convert to a paid domain ($20 USD annually)

If converted to paid, the domain stays connected to the cancelled site until transferred or reassigned.

Third-Party Domains

For domains purchased from other providers (like GoDaddy or Google), disconnect them from your Squarespace site before cancellation.

Important Considerations:

  • Domains are separate from website subscriptions
  • Visitors associate your domain with your brand
  • Consider keeping the domain for future use
  • Make domain decisions before cancelling your website
  • Auto-renewal continues unless manually disabled

Plan your domain management strategy before cancellation to ensure a smooth transition and maintain control over your online presence.
