When deleting your website, it's crucial to properly manage any associated domains. Here's what you need to know based on your domain registration type:

For Squarespace Domains:

  • Domains won't automatically expire when you cancel your website subscription
  • They continue to renew automatically on the scheduled date
  • You have four main options:
    1. Keep the domain with Squarespace
    2. Move it to another Squarespace site
    3. Transfer to a different provider
    4. Cancel by turning off auto-renewal

For Legacy Squarespace Domains:

  • Free legacy domains renew at no cost while linked to active annual website plans
  • Upon cancellation, you must choose to:
    1. Let the domain expire
    2. Convert to a paid domain ($20/year)
  • The domain stays linked to the canceled site until you take action

For Third-Party Domains:

  • Disconnect the domain from your Squarespace site before cancellation
  • Manage the domain through your original provider
  • Update DNS settings as needed for your new setup

Best Practices:

  1. Review all custom domains before canceling
  2. Decide on your domain strategy early
  3. Complete any transfers or moves before cancellation
  4. Update DNS settings if pointing to a new website

Remember: Your domain is your digital identity. Consider keeping it even after website deletion for potential future use.
