How to Enable Lightbox Effects for Images on Squarespace: Complete Guide
Lightboxes are overlay effects that display images in a centered popup with a dimmed background when clicked. Here's how to enable and customize lightbox effects across different Squarespace elements:
Gallery Sections (Version 7.1)
- Enable lightbox:
- Click Edit on page
- Hover over gallery and click pencil icon
- Choose Grid layout (Simple, Strips, or Masonry)
- Toggle Lightbox on
- Save changes
- Style lightbox:
- Open Site styles > Colors
- Select matching theme
- Adjust Lightbox background and icon colors
- Save changes
Image Blocks
Requirements:
- Must use Inline layout (7.0 sites) or Fluid engine section
- Can't have clickthrough URLs enabled
Setup steps:
- Open image editor
- Click Design tab
- Select Inline layout if available
- Toggle Lightbox on
- Choose Dark or Light overlay
Grid Gallery Blocks
- Add images to gallery
- Click Design tab
- Check Lightbox option
- Select Dark or Light overlay
Important Notes:
- Captions display on hover (desktop) or dot tap (mobile)
- Pinch-to-zoom not supported on mobile
- Slideshow/carousel/stack layouts don't support lightbox
- Videos need "Use Thumbnail" enabled for lightbox
- For linking images while keeping lightbox:
- Add text links in descriptions
- Use button options where available
Summary blocks automatically enable lightbox for gallery page content with Dark overlay. Clickthrough URLs override lightbox functionality.
Template-specific options vary for Gallery pages (7.0). Refer to template documentation for exact features and limitations.
