How to Cancel a Domain Transfer Request
A domain transfer can be canceled while it's still in the "Pending transfer" status. Here's how to manage domain transfer cancellations and what to do if you encounter issues.
When You Can Cancel a Transfer
You can cancel a domain transfer when:
- The transfer status shows "Pending transfer" in the Domains panel
- The domain provider hasn't yet approved the transfer
- The domain hasn't been released by the current provider
How to Cancel a Domain Transfer
- Go to the Domains panel
- Select the domain with the pending transfer
- Click the "..." menu
- Choose "Cancel transfer"
- Confirm the cancellation
If Transfer Cannot Be Canceled
Two scenarios may prevent cancellation:
- The current provider has already approved and released the domain
- The transfer process is too far along
In these cases:
- Contact your domain provider to attempt stopping the transfer
- Wait for the transfer to complete (if cancellation isn't possible)
- Note that transferred domains typically must remain with the new host for 60 days
Important: If the Domains panel still shows "Transfer in progress" after cancellation, contact your current provider to deny the transfer. Success depends on whether they've already released the domain.
Best Practice Tips
- Verify the transfer status with your domain provider before attempting cancellation
- Act quickly if you want to cancel, as the window for cancellation is limited
- Keep communication open with both your current and new domain providers
- Document all cancellation attempts and provider communications
If the transfer completes despite cancellation attempts, you can prepare to transfer the domain out after the mandatory 60-day waiting period.
