How to Cancel a Domain Transfer in Squarespace: Step-by-Step Guide
If you have started a domain transfer but need to cancel it, follow these steps to stop the transfer process.
When You Can Cancel a Domain Transfer
You can cancel a domain transfer while it shows "Pending transfer" status in the Domains panel and if your domain provider hasn't approved it yet. Contact your domain provider to confirm if they've approved the transfer.
How to Cancel a Domain Transfer
- Open the Domains panel
- Select the domain with the pending transfer
- Click the "..." menu
- Choose "Cancel transfer"
- Confirm the cancellation
If the domain still shows "Transfer in progress" after cancellation, contact your current provider to reject the transfer. Note that this may not be possible if they've already released the domain.
When Cancellation Isn't Possible
The transfer cannot be canceled if your domain provider has already released the domain to Squarespace. In this case:
- Wait for the transfer to complete
- Prepare to transfer the domain away from Squarespace if needed
- Remember that most domains must stay with the new host for 60 days after transfer
Best Practices
- Contact your domain provider first to check the transfer status
- Cancel the transfer in the Domains panel
- Ask your provider to halt the transfer on their end
- Let your provider continue hosting the domain if the transfer is canceled
This ensures proper handling of your domain during the cancellation process and maintains your domain's hosting status with the current provider.
Note: If you're transferring a domain from Squarespace to another provider, refer to the specific transfer-out process instead of these cancellation steps.
