How to Add MX Records for Google Workspace Email Setup

Mail eXchanger (MX) records are essential for proper email functionality with Google Workspace. This guide explains how to add and verify these records for your domain.

Checking Existing MX Records

Access your Domains dashboard and navigate to DNS settings to check for Google Workspace MX records. You should see either:

  • Five separate Google Workspace records
  • One consolidated Google Workspace record

Adding MX Records for Squarespace-Managed Domains

  1. Open Domains dashboard
  2. Select your domain
  3. Click DNS
  4. Choose "Google Workspace MX" from Add Preset Setting dropdown
  5. Records will be added automatically

For Third-Party Domains

Follow Google's documentation for provider-specific instructions to add MX records through your domain provider's DNS settings.

Adding MX Records for Subdomains

  1. Access Domains dashboard
  2. Click DNS
  3. Navigate to Custom Records
  4. Click Add Record
  5. Enter subdomain in Host field
  6. Select MX as Type
  7. Set Priority to 10
  8. Enter smtp.google.com in Data field

Important Notes:

  • Allow up to 72 hours for MX record changes to take effect
  • If email issues persist after adding records, remove all email-related records and re-add them
  • For accounts not purchased through Squarespace, contact Google or your domain provider for support
  • Verify records are correctly configured before making changes

If email functionality doesn't resume after 72 hours, contact support for additional assistance.
