Domain Renewals and Expiration Process: Squarespace Guide
Squarespace domain renewals occur automatically to ensure uninterrupted service. The system charges your stored payment method 15 days before the expiration date for another registration period.
Domain Renewal Process:
- Automatic renewal is enabled by default
- Payment processed 15 days before expiration
- Email notifications sent to domain owner and admin contacts
- Renewal prices visible in billing panel under Domains
If Payment Fails:
- Domain enters "expired" status
- Remains active for 15 days after failed charge
- Three payment attempts made every 5 days
- After 15 days, domain disconnects from site
Grace Periods for Expired Domains:
Squarespace Domains LLC:
- 60 days to reactivate expired domain
- Update billing information to restore service
Tucows Domains:
- 30 days grace period (45 days total from charge date)
- Must use Tucows renewal form after grace period
Important Notes:
- Domain billing is separate from website and other subscriptions
- Free domains registered before March 5, 2015, renew at $20 after first year
- Grouped domains share billing information
- Domains purchased through resellers follow reseller's renewal policies
To Prevent Expiration:
- Keep payment information current
- Monitor email notifications
- Enable automatic renewal
- Check domain panel for renewal dates
You can disable automatic renewal through the domain panel at least one day before the renewal date. To reactivate an expired domain, ensure your site has a valid credit card and reactivate through the domain panel.
Price changes don't affect existing registrations – domains renew at their original registration price.
