Comparing Domain Linking Methods: Name Server vs DNS Settings
Domain linking methods offer two approaches to connect your external domain to Squarespace: name server linking and DNS linking. Understanding which method to use is crucial for proper website setup.
Name Server Linking
Best for domains from:
- GoDaddy
- Namecheap
- Network Solutions
Avoid name server linking if your domain:
- Uses custom DNS records
- Has multiple subdomains
- Has DNSSEC enabled
- Uses complex configurations (glue records or forwarding)
- Requires specific security or traffic services
- Doesn't show the name server linking option
DNS Linking
Use this method when:
- Your domain provider isn't listed above
- Any of the above restrictions apply
- You need to maintain custom DNS records
Key Differences
Configuration:
- Name Server: Guided process requiring two name server records
- DNS: Manual setup requiring two CNAME records and four A-records
DNS Record Management:
- Name Server: Edit through Squarespace's DNS Settings panel
- DNS: Edit through your domain provider's platform
Custom Resources:
- Name Server: May disrupt custom email or services
- DNS: Maintains all custom configurations
How to Refuse Name Server Linking:
- Open Domains panel
- Click "Use my domain"
- Enter domain name
- Click "Link domain"
- Select "No, use DNS records"
- Choose domain provider
- Complete provider authentication
- Finish linking process
Verification: Check your Domains panel to confirm whether your domain is linked via DNS or name server.
Both methods effectively direct visitors to your site, but choosing the right one depends on your specific needs and existing domain configuration.
