Custom domains provide vital resources for online brand building and audience growth. When managing multiple domains, selecting a primary domain establishes your site's main address.

The primary domain appears in browser address bars regardless of which domain visitors use to access your site, as all custom domains redirect to it automatically. Your first custom domain becomes primary by default.

Setting a New Primary Domain

  1. Open the Domains panel
  2. Click "..." next to your chosen domain
  3. Select "Set as primary domain"
  4. Confirm by clicking "Set"

Requirements

  • Squarespace domains must be verified before setting as primary
  • External domains need proper linking (may take up to 72 hours)
  • Only one domain can be primary at a time
  • Primary domain displays across all site pages

Key Facts

  • Custom domains automatically hide the integrated .squarespace.com domain
  • Secondary domains use 301 redirects to the primary domain
  • Only primary domains appear in search engines
  • Traffic analytics combine data from all active domains
  • Subdomains can be set as primary

Important Notes

  • Integrated domains remain visible when logged in for security
  • Custom domains can't be used for specific pages only
  • Setting a new primary domain automatically removes primary status from previous domain
  • Search Console can help manage domain appearance in search results
  • Squarespace metrics show combined traffic from all domains

For optimal SEO performance, use Google Search Console to specify preferred domain appearance and request reindexing if needed. All secondary domains will automatically redirect to maintain consistent branding and user experience.
