How to Troubleshoot Domain Verification Issues in Google Workspace
Domain verification is crucial for Google Workspace to ensure no unauthorized users can access your domain. Here's how to troubleshoot common verification issues:
Common Verification Error Signs
- Error message "Google could not verify the domain" in Google Workspace menu
- Domain verification banner at the top of Admin console during first login
Initial Verification Steps
- Locate your temporary password from the welcome email
- Accept Google's terms of service
- Complete domain verification in the Admin console
For Squarespace Websites:
- Remove any homepage password protection
- Ensure homepage is activated and not in demo mode
- Verify proper connection of third-party email domains (allow up to 72 hours)
For Non-Squarespace Websites: Retry domain verification in Squarespace before proceeding to TXT record verification
Retry Verification Process
- Open Google Workspace menu
- Click "Retry" under verification error
- Refresh browser
- If retry button disappears, verification is successful
Red error message with warning symbol
TXT Record Verification (If Retry Fails)
- Sign in to Google Workspace Admin Console (private/incognito mode)
- Get unique verification record
- Access domain dashboard
- Add TXT record:
- For Squarespace domains: Use DNS settings > Add Record > Google Workspace Verification
- For third-party domains: Follow provider-specific DNS instructions
- Wait 10-60 minutes for verification
- Return to Admin console and click Verify
The TXT record should begin with "google-site-verification=" followed by a unique character string. For domain-specific DNS settings, consult your provider's documentation or Google's guides.
