How to Move Your Squarespace Domain: A Complete Guide to Domain Management
Moving a Squarespace Domain: Complete Guide
There are four main ways to direct visitors through your Squarespace domain: moving, connecting, forwarding, or pointing. Here's how to choose the right option for your needs.
Moving vs. Connecting
Moving a Domain:
- Merges domain billing and permissions with website
- Available for all domains
- Best when you want unified billing and team management
- Allows access to free domain/Google Workspace offerings
Connecting a Domain:
- Keeps domain billing and permissions separate
- Only available for parked Squarespace domains
- Ideal for separate payment methods and team access control
Forwarding vs. Pointing
Forwarding:
- Visitors see new website with changed URL
- Requires domain name and target URL
- Simple redirect to any website or page
Pointing:
- Visitors see new website while URL remains unchanged
- Requires domain name and either CNAME or IP address
- Maintains original domain appearance
Additional Options:
- Link subdomains between Squarespace websites
- Change primary domain while maintaining followers
- Transfer domain to another provider
- Create URL redirects for inactive pages
- Set up path forwarding for all associated URLs
When changing domains, the old domain automatically redirects to the new one, helping maintain your online presence.
Remember: Choose based on your specific needs for billing integration, URL appearance, and team management requirements.
Note: Linking between pages on the same Squarespace website isn't possible through domain management - use internal navigation instead.
For technical setup instructions, follow Squarespace's specific documentation for your chosen method.
