
How to Connect an IONOS Domain to Squarespace: DNS Setup Guide
Connect your 1&1 IONOS domain to Squarespace by following these steps for proper DNS configuration:
Step 1: Start the Connection in Squarespace
- Open the Domains panel
- Click "Use a domain I own"
- Enter your domain name
- Click "Connect domain"
- Select "Other" from the dropdown
- Click "Continue" in the message that appears
- Keep the DNS settings panel open for reference
Step 2: Access 1&1 IONOS
- Log in to your 1&1 IONOS account
- Locate your domain in the list
- Click Actions > DNS
Step 3: Delete Existing Records
- Set filter to "Show all records"
- Remove all AAAA and A records
- Click the trash icon and confirm deletion
Step 4: Add First CNAME Record
- Click "Add record" > CNAME
- Enter the unique code from Squarespace in "Host Name"
- Enter "verify.squarespace.com" in "Points to"
- Keep TTL at 1 hour
- Save changes
Step 5: Add Second CNAME Record
- Click "Add record" > CNAME
- Enter "www" in "Host Name"
- Enter "ext-cust.squarespace.com" in "Points to"
- Keep TTL at 1 hour
- Save changes
Step 6: Add A Records
Add four A records with the following settings:
- Host Name: @
- Points to (add one record for each):
- 198.185.159.144
- 198.185.159.145
- 198.49.23.144
- 198.49.23.145
- TTL: 1 hour
- Disable additional www record for each
Step 7: Wait for Connection
- Allow 24-72 hours for propagation
- Monitor progress in Squarespace DNS settings
- Check for green checkmarks in Current Data column
Troubleshooting:
- If you see "Unable to verify domain ownership," use the DNS record verification tool
- Contact IONOS support if you need additional assistance
- Don't delete Mail or Email host records to maintain email service
