Nameservers connect your domain to specific online services and host DNS settings. Here's how to manage nameservers for Squarespace-managed domains and third-party domains connected via Nameserver Connect.

Important Considerations:

  • Changing nameservers interrupts website access and disconnects Google Workspace
  • Custom nameservers require manual DNS record management
  • Changes can take up to 72 hours to take effect
  • You need 2-13 nameservers

How to Change Nameservers:

  1. Add or Edit Custom Nameservers:
  • Open domain dashboard
  • Click domain name
  • Navigate to DNS > Domain Nameservers
  • Select "Use custom nameservers"
  • Confirm DNSSEC disable prompt
  • Enter nameserver information
  • Click Save
  1. Reset to Squarespace Default:
  • Open domain dashboard
  • Click domain name
  • Navigate to DNS > Domain Nameservers
  • Select "Use Squarespace nameservers"
  • Click Save
  • Re-enable DNSSEC when prompted

Troubleshooting:

  • Wait 72 hours for changes to take effect
  • Contact your nameserver provider if issues persist
  • For DNS records not loading, verify settings with your provider

Best Practices:

  • Only use custom nameservers if you need DNSSEC or have domain management experience
  • Keep default Squarespace nameservers unless specific third-party services require changes
  • Backup DNS records before making changes
  • Plan for potential email service interruptions
  • Document any custom DNS entries before switching nameservers

Remember: If your domain uses DNS Connect, manage DNS settings through your external domain provider instead of following these steps.
