How to Run a Traceroute: Troubleshooting Domain Issues Guide
A traceroute helps identify where your domain is having communication issues with a server. Use this diagnostic tool when your domain isn't loading properly and basic troubleshooting steps haven't resolved the issue.
Before Running a Traceroute:
- Clear your browser's cache
- Try basic browser troubleshooting
- Verify if the issue is domain-related, site expiration, or platform-specific
Running a Traceroute by Operating System:
Windows:
- Click Start menu > Run
- Type "cmd" and press Enter (Windows 8/10: search for "command prompt")
- Type "tracert yourdomain.com" (replace with your domain)
- Press Enter
- Copy the results
Mac OS:
- Open Spotlight Search
- Search for and open Terminal
- Type "traceroute yourdomain.com" (replace with your domain)
- Press Enter
- Copy the results
Linux:
- Open Terminal
- Type "traceroute -I yourdomain.com" (replace with your domain)
- Press Enter
- Copy the results
After completing the traceroute, save the results to share with technical support for analysis. This information helps identify where connection issues occur in the network path between your computer and the server.
Always include the complete traceroute results when submitting a support ticket, as this data is crucial for diagnosing network-related issues effectively.
