Videos can be added to your website in two main ways: embedding from external services or uploading directly to your site.

Embedding Videos

Supported platforms:

  • YouTube
  • Vimeo
  • Animoto
  • Wistia

Requirements for embedding:

  • Use video URL for standard YouTube/Vimeo videos
  • Use embed code for advanced options or other platforms
  • YouTube URLs must include youtube.com/watch, youtube.com/playlist, or youtu.be

Uploading Videos Directly

  • Course pages: Up to 5,000 MB, three hours max
  • Video pages: 5,000 MB limit, three hours max
  • Video blocks: 500 MB limit, 30-minute limit
  • Section backgrounds: 500 MB limit, 60-second limit

Recommended bitrates:

  • 360p: 1.5 MBps
  • 1080p: 3 MBps

Where to Add Videos

  • Video blocks

  • Gallery blocks
  • Section backgrounds
  • Lock screen backgrounds

Version 7.0:

  • All Version 7.1 locations
  • Gallery pages
  • Banners
  • Project pages
  • Landing pages

Best Practices

  1. Choose the right hosting option:
  • External hosting for longer videos
  • Direct upload for short, owned content
  1. Optimize for performance:
  • Use recommended file sizes
  • Check video metadata before uploading
  • Consider bandwidth limitations
  1. Video features:
  • Background videos play silently and loop
  • Gallery blocks can mix videos with images
  • Animated GIFs work in any image location

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Slow loading: Allow time for buffering
  • Missing controls: Check player settings
  • Size issues: Verify aspect ratios
  • Quality problems: Ensure proper export settings

Remember: Each Squarespace site includes 30 minutes of video storage. Additional storage requires a Digital Products plan.
