DNS records not saving or displaying errors? Here's how to troubleshoot common issues and fix them effectively.

Replace Placeholder Values

  • Remove gray placeholder text in "Host" and "Data" fields
  • Priority field is optional
  • Actual values must be entered for records to save

Host Field Formatting

  • Domain name automatically appends to Host values
  • Use @ for root domain (yourdomain.com)
  • Avoid duplicate Host values across different record types
  • Remove trailing dots from values

Common Error Messages and Solutions

Invalid IP Address or Host Name:

  • Check Data field format
  • Remove trailing dots
  • Verify correct information from provider

Conflicting Records:

  1. Open domain control panel
  2. Navigate to DNS Settings
  3. Check Custom Records for duplicates
  4. Delete conflicting records
  5. Add new record
  6. Allow 24-72 hours for propagation

AAAA Records:

  • Use fully expanded IPv6 addresses
  • Example:
    • Incorrect: 2620:12a:800::3
    • Correct: 2620:12a:8000:0:0:0:0:0:3

TXT/DMARC Records Exceeding 255 Characters:

  • Split into multiple shorter strings
  • Add each string separately
  • Use online DNS splitting tools if needed
  • Maintain proper record formatting

Priority Field:

  • Only editable for MX and SRV records
  • Appears but inactive for other record types

"Provide Valid Data for the Alias" Error:

  • Check for records exceeding 255 characters
  • Remove extra characters or trailing periods
  • Split long records if necessary

Additional Notes:

  • Allow 24-72 hours for DNS changes to propagate
  • Contact your service provider for specific record requirements
  • Verify all values before saving
  • Keep records organized and documented

For complex issues, consult with domain service providers or DNS specialists for technical assistance.
